Profitability

For the moment, try to forget about your current Website and what it does. Think about what your Website could do for the business to increase profitability.

Consider Direct functions (including e-commerce) such as on-line sales, orders, quotations, enquiries, visitors, and so on. What’s a reasonable number or percentage to aim for? For example, should you aim for 5% or 95% of all your orders to come via your website?

Consider Indirect influences or functions (not just “marketing”) such as company image, product information dissemination, answering queries, articles of interest, and other “intangible” reasons for potential customers to visit your website.

Direct or Indirect?

Which is more important, Direct or Indirect? What’s achievable within a 6 month time-scale? What kind of people are you expecting to visit your website? Take some time out to inspect your major competitors’ websites: what objectives are they trying to achieve? Should you be encouraged by your competitors’ website incompetence, or dismayed by their excellence?
